Gut Microbiome and Its Role in the Pathophysiology of Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome is the most common functional gastrointestinal disorder, affecting up to 9% individuals globally. Although etiology of this likely heterogenous, it presents with its hallmark symptoms abdominal pain and altered intestinal motility. Moreover, considered be a disorder gut-brain interaction, microbiome has often been implicated as central player in pathophysiology. Patients irritable display composition function gut microbiota compared healthy controls. Microbiome directed therapies, such probiotics, antibiotics fecal transplantation, appear beneficial for both psychiatric comorbidities. This review aims recapitulate available literature on contribution pathophysiology presentation syndrome, well current microbiome-targeted treatments disease.
